Guests say

Gunpowder Cottage in Elterwater is praised for its superb location, with easy access to local walks and a friendly pub nearby. Guests appreciate the comfortable living space, well-equipped kitchen, and the recent upgrades to the bathroom and heating system. The enclosed garden and the allowance of dogs add to the property's charm. While some minor maintenance issues and cleanliness concerns are noted, the overall experience is positive, with many guests expressing a desire to return.

The cottage generally receives positive remarks for cleanliness, with crisp white bedding and a well-cleaned property upon arrival. However, some guests have noted issues such as dusty floors, dirty cutlery, and cobwebs, which slightly detract from the overall impression.

The location of the cottage is highly praised for its proximity to local amenities, including the Britannia Inn, and for being an excellent base for walks and outdoor activities. The scenic views and peaceful environment contribute to its high rating.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, with a cosy sitting room, log fire, and spacious bedrooms. However, some have mentioned that the living space could feel cramped with a full house and that the mattresses could benefit from protectors.

The cottage is well-furnished with a modern kitchen and bathroom, and guests appreciate the enclosed garden and Wi-Fi. Points are deducted for reported issues with the induction hob, inadequate heating at times, and the need for better cookware and maintenance of some facilities.

While guests have mentioned a welcome pack, there is insufficient information to determine if this is a consistent offering or to assess the overall thoughtfulness of the hosts. Therefore, a score cannot be provided, and guests should note that such gestures are not guaranteed.

About this property

This characterful holiday home in the village is beautifully refurbished with modern creature comforts, spacious enough for large families & welcomes dogs too.

A Lakeland slate tiled hall leads to the dining room, with doors to garden and interesting beamed archway to the modern kitchen. Heated cloakroom for drying walking gear, shower room and WC. The cosy living room has a Lakeland slate fireplace, inset woodburning stove, old oak beams and soft cushioned furnishings. Upstairs to the four bedrooms; 1 double, 1 double with extra single bed, 1 twin and 1 single. Excellent main house shower room with shower, WC and basin.

At the gateway to the Langdale Valley, Elterwater village is a perfect location for soaking up the scenery, with walks in every direction and a warm welcome at the renowned Britannia Inn. Chesters by the River is a fantastic veggie café with amazing lunches and cakes. Elterwater was once home to a gunpowder factory which used superior quality flint only found in the renowned local slate quarries. Today it’s all about peace and quiet. A short drive away is the bustling village of Ambleside, and the shores of Lake Windermere. Here you’ll enjoy cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. Also nearby is Coniston water, the Lake District's third largest lake. There you'll find more opportunities for boating activities, perhaps discovering Peel Island - featured in Arthur Ransome's Swallows & Amazons as 'Wild Cat Island'. Beautiful Tarn Hows is close by too, with another great pub the Drunken Duck.

Elterwater is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A tranquil hamlet with its tiny ‘swan lake’, Elter Water, sitting at the gateway of the striking Langdale valley. The soft valley landscape is in sharp contrast to the steep jagged Langdale Pikes. Elterwater sits between Ambleside and Great Landgale, where at the top of the valley the infamous Wrynose Path is the only way out of the u-shaped valley, giving it a superb sense of seclusion. The larger towns of Grasmere and Ambleside are both less than 4 miles away providing a host of options for shopping and eating out.

There is no need for a car once parked up. Walks from the door and proximity to pub are a deciding factor as well as taking our dogs. I think the only detail to mention is new place mats please!!!!

It involves steep steps down, and there is no grab handle or banister which would be highly desirable for the safety of elderly or partly-abled guests. For this reason, one member of our party could not enter the cottage, and was forced to stay in nearby Langdale Hotel. 2. The garden was in a very untidy state. An attractive feature in previous visits, it was rendered unusable for our visit. We will not be booking this cottage for next year.

) Whilst it could have had more ordinary water glasses there was no shortage of wine glasses! The heating was easy to adjust. A few lights didnt work in the front room, which is a dark room. But overall, a very nice cottage with excellent Shower upstairs. For the bins on a Monday, the bin van reverses right up along the Pub carpark to cottage side. Cottage access is at back of Pub carpark. Britannia Inn has great food, and is virtually next door.
