Guests say

Gunpowder Cottage in Elterwater is praised for its superb location, with many guests enjoying the proximity to local pubs and the ease of access to walks. The cottage is described as cosy and comfortable, particularly the lounge area, and recent upgrades to the bathroom and kitchen have been well-received. The enclosed garden is also appreciated by those with pets.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The cleanliness of the cottage receives mixed reviews. While some guests find it clean and well-presented, others note issues with dust, dirty crockery, and cobwebs. The inconsistency leads to a slightly above-average score.

The location of the cottage is consistently lauded for its convenience for walking, proximity to a friendly pub, and the overall charm of Elterwater. It is considered an excellent base for exploring the Lake District.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, with a cosy lounge and comfortable bedrooms. However, some note that the living space could feel cramped with a full occupancy and that some beds may require mattress protectors.

Facilities are generally good, with a well-equipped kitchen and a secure garden. However, there are comments about inadequate heating, a temperamental hob, and the need for better cookware. The recent bathroom upgrade is a positive change.

There is no consistent mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the owners. While a welcome pack is briefly mentioned, it is not a recurring theme in the reviews, and thus a score cannot be accurately provided.

About this property

This characterful holiday home in the village is beautifully refurbished with modern creature comforts, spacious enough for large families & welcomes dogs too.

A Lakeland slate tiled hall leads to the dining room, with doors to garden and interesting beamed archway to the modern kitchen. Heated cloakroom for drying walking gear, shower room and WC. The cosy living room has a Lakeland slate fireplace, inset woodburning stove, old oak beams and soft cushioned furnishings. Upstairs to the four bedrooms; 1 double, 1 double with extra single bed, 1 twin and 1 single. Excellent main house shower room with shower, WC and basin.

At the gateway to the Langdale Valley, Elterwater village is a perfect location for soaking up the scenery, with walks in every direction and a warm welcome at the renowned Britannia Inn. Chesters by the River is a fantastic veggie café with amazing lunches and cakes. Elterwater was once home to a gunpowder factory which used superior quality flint only found in the renowned local slate quarries. Today it’s all about peace and quiet. A short drive away is the bustling village of Ambleside, and the shores of Lake Windermere. Here you’ll enjoy cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. Also nearby is Coniston water, the Lake District's third largest lake. There you'll find more opportunities for boating activities, perhaps discovering Peel Island - featured in Arthur Ransome's Swallows & Amazons as 'Wild Cat Island'. Beautiful Tarn Hows is close by too, with another great pub the Drunken Duck.

Elterwater is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A tranquil hamlet with its tiny ‘swan lake’, Elter Water, sitting at the gateway of the striking Langdale valley. The soft valley landscape is in sharp contrast to the steep jagged Langdale Pikes. Elterwater sits between Ambleside and Great Landgale, where at the top of the valley the infamous Wrynose Path is the only way out of the u-shaped valley, giving it a superb sense of seclusion. The larger towns of Grasmere and Ambleside are both less than 4 miles away providing a host of options for shopping and eating out.

It involves steep steps down, and there is no grab handle or banister which would be highly desirable for the safety of elderly or partly-abled guests. For this reason, one member of our party could not enter the cottage, and was forced to stay in nearby Langdale Hotel. 2. The garden was in a very untidy state. An attractive feature in previous visits, it was rendered unusable for our visit. We will not be booking this cottage for next year.

) Whilst it could have had more ordinary water glasses there was no shortage of wine glasses! The heating was easy to adjust. A few lights didnt work in the front room, which is a dark room. But overall, a very nice cottage with excellent Shower upstairs. For the bins on a Monday, the bin van reverses right up along the Pub carpark to cottage side. Cottage access is at back of Pub carpark. Britannia Inn has great food, and is virtually next door.

Only thing that lets it down is the Wi-Fi speed and bandwidth which is very slow. It won't stop us from staying again but would be a 5 star all around if this was improved.
